The Miami Heat dominated the Boston Celtics in the second half of Game 1 to cruise to a 118-107 win in large part due to Jimmy Butler's 41-point performance. The Celtics looked like the aggressor early in the game, but looked shellshocked in the second half when the Heat began to turn up the pressure. Missing two starters in Marcus Smart and Al Horford certainly played a part, but Boston will have to figure out a way to remain consistent on both ends of the floor in Game 2 so it doesn't get down in an 0-2 series hole.

The Celtics entered the locker room at halftime with an eight-point lead over the Heat and appeared to be in complete control of the series opener. Boston star Jayson Tatum scored 21 of his 29 points in the first half, carrying over his success from the second round.

But the momentum shifted quickly in the third quarter. The Heat outscored the Celtics 39-14 behind a dominant performance from Jimmy Butler, who had 17 points and three steals in that frame. He finished with 41 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks in Miami's 118-107 victory.

ESPN will host Thursdayโ€™s matchup between the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat with tipoff set for 8:30 p.m. ET. The game will take place at FTX Arena in Miami.

The Celtics dropped Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Heat on Tuesday night, losing 118-107 after Miami blitzed them with a 22-2 run in the third quarter.

Boston is 3-0 this postseason following a loss, however, and has won 10 of its last 11 games after a loss. The C's are also expected to get a boost from point guard Marcus Smart, who missed Game 1 due to a mid-foot sprain but is listed as probable for Thursday's Game 2 at FTX Arena.

Forsberg: How will Celtics respond after embarrassing stretch vs. Heat?

Al Horford (health and safety protocols) is listed as doubtful, so the Celtics will need big man Robert Williams to step up again after tallying a playoff career-high 18 points in 28 minutes Tuesday night.

The spotlight will also be on Jayson Tatum, who scored 29 points in Game 1 but committed seven turnovers and was outdueled by Heat star Jimmy Butler (41 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four steals, three blocks).

Now, the Heat will look to once again protect their home court and take a 2-0 series lead. Can the Celtics steal Game 2 at FTX Arena?

The Celtics had a 62-54 lead in Game 1 before getting completely smoked in the third quarter. Jayson Tatum ran out of gas in the second half, being uncharacteristically careless with the basketball too often. Bostonโ€™s defense also gave up too many open shots, but should be improved with the return of Marcus Smart.

The Heat let Jimmy Butler carry them in Game 1, and the star forward will look to keep up that production in Game 2. Tyler Herro also had a big game, while Gabe Vincent filled in admirably for Kyle Lowry. The Heat have played sound basketball on both ends of the floor this postseason at home, and that should continue tonight.

Storylines

Heat: If there's one thing to criticize about Miami's performance in Game 1, it would be their first-half play. Specifically how they defended the paint, which wasn't good. The Heat surrendered 42 points in the paint to the Celtics in the first half, a staggering number for a team that allowed the fewest points in the paint during the regular season. In the end, it didn't matter much as Miami played tougher defense after halftime, but it would be more beneficial for the Heat to start the game stronger and not let Robert Williams III get whatever he wants around the rim.

Celtics: Boston might've won Game 1 had they played just halfway better than they did in the third quarter of that contest. Getting outscored 39-14 can't happen, even if they were without Smart and Horford. Tatum went ghost in the second half after racking up 21 points in the first two quarters, and Jaylen Brown only came alive in the fourth quarter when the game was practically out of reach. The Celtics threw the first punch in the first half, but did not respond well at all when the Heat began to counter. That can't happen again, and with the news that Smart is probable for Game 2, they'll have a better shot at making sure there isn't a repeat of the third quarter in Game 1.

Prediction

I'm going with the Celtics to even up the series with the assumption that Smart is returning. Butler got whatever he wanted on offense, and while I don't expect Smart to shut down Butler completely, I do think he'll make his life a bit more difficult. Having Smart also breathes life into Boston's offense as he does a great job of keeping the ball moving when Tatum and Brown try to hold it for too long. The pick: Celtics MLfhf
